The few days before Halloween went past with astonishing speed. Allegra found that everyone in the village already knew who she was, so she didn’t have to introduce herself wherever she went.

The librarian went to a lot of trouble to find books and newspaper clippings about the history of Sandy Cove in general, and the coastguard station in particular, and told Allegra to read the account of the German plane crashing in the mountains above the village during the war. This was around the time Sean had come back from America, and Allegra searched without success for mentions of his name, or even his family. But there was nothing. All she could find was a little notice to say that the post of coastguard was open and to apply at the county council office in Killarney. The cottage was now available to the successful applicant, it said in the issue from 1940. She assumed this was when Sean’s mother and siblings were told to leave after his father had died. Allegra felt a dart of sadness as she read it. How hard it would have been to be turfed out like that and find yourself without a roof over your head. And how lucky that Sean had come into money at that precise time. But where had the money come from? Maybe Lucille would find out when she went to visit the Walsh family in Dingle…

Allegra pushed those thoughts away as she walked around the village, exploring the neighbourhood further, spending more time looking around than before. She discovered that the village and its surroundings were even more enchanting than what she had seen on the website. With its lovely old houses all painted in bright tones of red, green, yellow and even pink, the village would have looked strange anywhere else, but perfectly suited the coastal setting. It looked wonderful against the stunning views of the ocean and the islands far out to sea.

She went on long walks up the slopes from the little beach below Starlight Cottages and took a lot of photos that she posted on Instagram, which earned her a lot of likes and enthusiastic comments from awestruck friends in Boston. Despite the cold winds and the ever-changing weather patterns – from rain to sunshine and then back again – Allegra couldn’t have been happier. This place was a perfect escape from stress and sorrow and she felt herself healing and regaining some of her lost energy and will to live.

Starlight Cottages were suddenly a lot livelier, as Ella and her husband, Rory, back from Paris, introduced themselves to Allegra and invited her to dinner, along with Lucille, who of course was Rory’s mother.

Ella, a pretty and lively brunette with an enchanting smile and a twinkle in her eyes, served a dinner of mussels in a white wine sauce with French fries accompanied by a crisp Chablis, which she declared was ‘more Belgian than French’. But as she had bought fresh mussels from the harbour fish stand earlier that day, it seemed the ideal meal for this occasion.
